Our Life Insurance Calculator estimates how much cover your family may need if you die. Rather than relying on the old “10× salary” rule, it uses your net income and the age of your youngest child to provide a sensible starting point. It’s a guide, not financial advice, but it’s a useful first step.
Editor’s note: First published in 2018. Fully revised in July 2026 to provide an up-to-date Life Insurance calculator for Ireland, based on practical income replacement rather than outdated salary multiples.
One of the most common questions I’m asked is:
“”How much cover would my family actually need if I died?”
It’s a fair question, and unfortunately there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.
Your ideal level of cover depends on things like:
Our calculator won’t replace personalised advice, but it will give you a realistic estimate in less than a minute.
If you’d like to understand how we calculate the result, including why simple salary multiples often fall short, we’ve explained the full methodology in our guide
Most online Life Insurance calculators use a simple rule of thumb, such as multiplying your salary by 10 or 15.
Our calculator takes a more practical approach.
It estimates how much of your net annual income your family may need to replace until your youngest child reaches around age 25, when they’re more likely to be financially independent.
The calculation assumes that your household won’t need to replace all of your income because some personal expenses would naturally disappear. Instead, it focuses on replacing enough income to help your family maintain their standard of living during the years they need it most.
It’s intentionally simple, so think of the result as a sensible starting point rather than an exact recommendation.
What the calculator takes into account
Like any online calculator, this one makes a few assumptions.
It estimates how much income your family may need to replace, but it doesn’t know your full financial picture.
Before deciding how much Life Insurance to apply for, you should also consider:
For some people, these could significantly reduce the amount of additional Life Insurance they need. For others, particularly young families with large mortgages and limited savings, they may increase it.
A good estimate is better than a perfect guess.
Don’t worry about calculating the exact euro. The goal is to make sure your family would have enough money to stay financially secure if the worst happened. If you’re unsure, we’d much rather help you work it out than see you underinsured.
The figure from the calculator isn’t necessarily the amount of new Life Insurance you need to buy.
It’s your starting point.
Before arranging any additional cover, look at what protection you already have in place.
Once you’ve taken these into account, you’ll have a much clearer picture of how much extra Life Insurance, if any, you actually need.
Example
If the calculator suggests you need €600,000 of cover, but you already have €250,000 through your employer and €100,000 of existing Life Insurance, you may only need around €250,000 of additional cover.
Working out how much Life Insurance you need is an important first step.
The next challenge is finding an insurer that’s prepared to offer you cover at a competitive price.
If you’re young, healthy and have a straightforward medical history, that’s usually a simple process.
If you’ve had a health condition, take regular medication, or have been declined or postponed before, the outcome can vary dramatically from one insurer to another.
That’s where an independent broker can make a real difference.
At Lion.ie, we compare all of Ireland’s major Life Insurance providers and know which insurers are generally more accommodating for different medical conditions, occupations and lifestyles.
Our job isn’t just to help you get cover. It’s to help you get the right cover with the right insurer and on the best available terms.
Online calculators are great for getting a ballpark figure, but they can’t take everything into account.
Your mortgage, Death in Service benefits, existing Life Insurance, savings and medical history can all have a significant impact on how much cover you actually need.
If you’d like a second opinion, we’re happy to sense-check the result and recommend the level of cover we’d arrange if you were our own client.
