10-Second Summary
You don’t automatically need Life Insurance. However, if your death would leave your partner, children or anyone else struggling financially, it’s one of the most important financial decisions you’ll ever make. If nobody depends on your income, you may not need Life Insurance yet—but you should still consider Income Protection.
Probably.
But not everyone does.
That’s the only answer.
Many insurance websites try to convince every visitor they need Life Insurance. We don’t.
Whether you need cover comes down to one simple question.
It really is that simple.
Life Insurance exists to replace the financial value you provide to the people who rely on you. It doesn’t replace you—nothing can—but it can replace your income, clear debts and give your family financial security at the worst possible time.
Life Insurance makes sense whenever someone depends on you financially.
That includes people who:
If your death would leave someone struggling to pay the bills, Life Insurance is there to provide a tax-free lump sum to help keep their lives on track.

Not everyone needs Life Insurance.
You may not need it if you:
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t protect yourself.
If you’re working and rely on your income, Income Protection is often more important than Life Insurance because you’re far more likely to become ill during your working life than to die before retirement.
Life Insurance protects the people you leave behind.
Income Protection protects you while you’re still here.
It depends entirely on your circumstances.
Let’s look at the most common situations people find themselves in and the types of protection that usually make the most sense.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer because everyone’s financial responsibilities are different.
Below are the situations we come across most often and the protection we’d usually recommend.
If you have children, Life Insurance is no longer about you.
It’s about making sure your family can continue paying the mortgage, buying food, covering childcare costs and giving your children the future you planned for them if you’re no longer around.
Ask yourself this.
If you died tomorrow, could your family maintain their current lifestyle without your income?
For most families, the honest answer is no.
Mortgage Protection will clear the mortgage, which is incredibly important, but it won’t replace your salary or pay everyday living expenses.
That’s why most parents need more than Mortgage Protection alone.
Whether you need Life Insurance depends on how financially dependent you are on each other.
If you both work, earn similar salaries and have no mortgage, Life Insurance may not be a priority yet.
However, if one of you would struggle financially without the other’s income, or you’re planning to start a family in the next few years, it’s worth putting cover in place sooner rather than later.
Mortgage Protection for cohabiting couples
Remember, Life Insurance is generally cheapest when you’re young and healthy.
Buying your first home? Our Mortgage Protection Guide explains exactly what lenders require, how much cover you need and how to avoid paying more than necessary.
If nobody depends on your income, you may not need Life Insurance at all.
That’s perfectly normal.
However, that doesn’t mean you should ignore financial protection altogether.
If you’re working, your biggest financial asset is your ability to earn an income.
That’s why we’d usually recommend looking at Income Protection before Life Insurance.
One exception is if you’re young, healthy and know you’ll eventually need Life Insurance.
Locking in cover while you’re in good health means you’ll benefit from today’s age and health rather than waiting until you’re older, when premiums are naturally higher and medical conditions are more common.
Being self-employed changes the conversation.
If you can’t work because of illness or injury, your income may stop immediately.
Many self-employed people have little or no employer sick pay, which makes protecting your income just as important as protecting your family.
If your business supports your household, your family depends on that income every bit as much as an employee’s family does.
Life Insurance becomes less important once you’re financially independent and nobody relies on your income.
However, it can still play an important role in estate planning.
If you’re concerned about leaving your family with an inheritance tax bill, a Section 72 Life Insurance policy can be an extremely tax-efficient way of providing the money needed to pay Revenue.
Whether that’s appropriate depends on your assets and your family’s circumstances, so it’s worth taking advice before making a decision.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that Life Insurance solves every financial problem.
It doesn’t.
Different protection products exist to deal with different risks, which is why we look at your overall situation rather than simply recommending Life Insurance.
Buying Life Insurance isn’t about buying the cheapest policy you can find.
It’s about making sure the people you care about would be financially secure if the worst happened.
Equally, don’t assume you need cover just because someone at the bank, on a comparison website or in an advert says you do.
Some people genuinely don’t need Life Insurance yet.
Others need far more than they realise.
The important thing is getting advice that’s based on your circumstances rather than a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
Whether you’re arranging Life Insurance for the first time or wondering if you need cover at all, we’re happy to help.
We’ll explain your options in plain English, compare Ireland’s leading insurers and recommend the protection that genuinely suits your circumstances.
That might mean arranging Life Insurance.
It might mean prioritising Income Protection.
Or it might mean telling you that you don’t need either just yet.
