For the last 8 months, Royal London have had the upperhand with their improved critical illness cover offering.
But have Zurich Life dealt them a knockout blow?
Zurich Life have improved their Term Assurance & Serious Illness Cover offering in 5 ways.
Zurich Life have increased their payout to €7,000 per child (highest in Ireland)
They have also increased the age they will cover the child from 21 up to 25 (if the child is in full time education) for life cover, serious illness cover and for overseas surgery payment.
Zurich Life will pay €7,500 in advance from the deceased’s life insurance policy towards funeral costs even before grant of probate is issued.
This is something I have been championing personally so I’m delighted. I have seen cases where the cost of an unexpected funeral has caused serious financial stress. Waiting for grant of probate can take months so this prepayment will help people at a most difficult time.
A criticism I level at the insurers is they only “enhance” their serious illness cover by adding illnesses that nobody has ever heard of. So fair play to Zurich, we have all heard of Type 1 Diabetes.
According to Diabetes Ireland, up to five children and teenagers are diagnosed each week with Type 1 diabetes in Ireland.
But with this addition, we’re back into the “illness that nobody has ever heard of” territory 😒
If you’re in the market for Serious Illness Cover, it’s a tight call between Royal London and Zurich Life but for me, taking into account all the enhancements above, Zurich Life just shade it.
