Life Insurance With Underactive Thyroid

does hypothyroidism affect life insurance

see here for life insurance with overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)

Can I get life insurance with underactive thyroid?

Yes, if you have hypothyroidism, you’ll be able to get life insurance and if you play your cards right….

…you can get the standard price.

But make sure you  speak with a knowledgeable, independent life insurance specialist, who deals with all 5 life insurance companies in Ireland.

If you don’t get quotes from all 6 providers, you might end up paying too much for your cover.

How much will it cost?

Usually you’ll get the normal price if your thyroid is being treated with medication like levothyroxine/eltroxin, without complications.

What information does the insurer look for?

Information typically required for life insurance with underactive thyroid is as follows.

  • Cause
  • Treatment and degree of control
  • Current thyroid function tests (TFTs)
  • Any complications particularly signs or symptoms of coronary artery disease

The insurer will request you complete a questionnaire.

A detailed questionnaire should avoid the need for a medical report from your GP.

How do I know if I have hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is where the thyroid gland fails to produce sufficient amounts of the thyroid hormones.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism include

  • fatigue,
  • cold intolerance,
  • weight gain,
  • depression
  • cardiac problems.

A blood test measuring your hormone levels is the only accurate way to find out if there is a problem.

The test, called a thyroid function test, looks at levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine in the blood.

A high level of TSH and a low level of thyroxine hormone in the blood could mean you have an underactive thyroid.

If your test shows raised TSH but normal thyroxine, it means you may be at risk of developing an underactive thyroid in the future.

Treatment requires lifelong replacement of the deficient thyroid hormones using traditional medication  or natural thyroid supplements.

Hashimoto is an autoimmune thyroidism with some inflammation, but it’s treated like any other hypothyroidism. If controlled, you’ll get the normal price.

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which an overactive thyroid gland is producing an excessive amount of thyroid hormones that circulate in the blood.

What about serious illness cover?

You should get the normal price it you’re being treated without complication.

And income protection?

Again, the normal price is possible.

Over to you…

Hypothyroidism shouldn’t affect your life insurance premium as long as you apply to an insurer who understands your condition.

But remember, some insurers are better than others when it comes to life insurance with underactive thyroid
